Self-development and self-transformation – 2
The concrete implementation of psychosynthesis
“It is evident that organic unity is a goal, rather than an already existing reality, a goal that can be visualised, approached gradually and, up to a certain point, achieved.”
R. Assagioli
After the project phase (see Who do i want to become? Vision and self-planning) comes the reconstruction phase: this is a very energetic stage, consisting of the systematic utilisation of techniques, exercises and methods. Once we have decided on the goal to be reached and the model to be realised, the concrete implementation of the psychosynthesis can take place, i.e., the formation or actual reconstruction of the new personality.
This work can be divided into three main stages (Assagioli, 1965):
- The utilisation of energies, both those released through the analysis and disintegration of dominant unconscious complexes, and other energies, tendencies and possibilities latent at various levels. The aim is to channel and express them in a harmless, or even useful and creative, way. This task often requires a transmutation of energies, especially sexual, affective and aggressive ones.
- The second stage of the work of psychosynthesis is the development of the elements that are deficient or inadequate for our purposes. This development can be carried out in two ways: by direct “evocation”, autosuggestion, creative affirmation; or by the methodical training of the undeveloped functions, a training analogous to physical training and similarly aimed at increasing our energy levels and skills.
- The third stage of psychosynthesis consists in the creation of a stable organisation of the personality, the coordination and subordination of the various bio-psycho-spiritual elements, the various energies and functions of the psyche into a correct hierarchy of values.
Clearly, carrying out such a complex and comprehensive inner programme requires adequate preparation. Having grasped the psychological laws and principles on which the process rests, and learnt the various psychosynthetic techniques to be implemented, the rest is a question of practice. Life then becomes a laboratory offering unlimited opportunities for experience and training. In this way, the new regenerated personality is formed, a new and higher life begins, of which the preceding one can be considered as a mere preparation, almost a gestation.
